THE LAY OF THE LAND! Climate, geography, natural resources and vegetation will be studied to determine their influence on population patterns, value development and economic activities within the various regions of the Americas.
FINDING THE LAND! From the Vikings to Columbus, Europeans sailed to discover what lay beyond the cartographer’s charts and learned of new lands, new people, and new treasures. This collision of cultures will also be examined.
SETTLING THE LAND! From Missions in the Southwest to permanent colonies on the Eastern Seaboard, students will analyze the European giants of Great Britain, France and Spain and their exploits for God, Gold and Glory. Students will discover the 13 colonies, their people, and their ways of life.
THE LOVE OF THE LAND! This six weeks students will study the events leading to the American Revolution and the development of freedom. Students will wind their studies from the French and Indian War, through the blunders of Parliament and the Crown, to the Shot Heard Round The World.
THE LAW OF THE LAND! Students will learn about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention. They will learn about the three branches of government and the system of checks and balances. Students will develop an understanding of the framework of government as laid out in the Constitution and how it is still relevant for today.
MY PLACE IN THE LAND! Students will learn how the Texas Constitution and local governments reflect the principle of federalism and the principle of separation of powers.
